SUMMIT — Summit’s Annual Memorial Day Parade and Commemoration Ceremony will honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for this great nation on Monday, May 25. All are welcome to march in or observe the parade as well as attend the Commemoration Ceremony on Summit’s Village Green.
The 2015 parade will begin marching at 10 a.m. from Bouras Properties, 25 DeForest Ave., through downtown Summit, ending on the Village Green.
The parade will be led by Summit’s American Legion Post-322, followed by the Summit High School marching band, Summit Police and Fire Departments, Summit EMS, Scout Troops, and various other local organizations.
Spectators are welcome to cheer on the parade as it makes its way down Beechwood Road, Springfield Avenue, and Maple Street. Flags will be distributed along the parade route.
The Commemoration Ceremony will take place once the parade has reached the Village Green. A brief presentation will be led on the Summit Veteran’s Lifetime Achievement Award, followed by historic speeches and poems by local students.
The ceremony will also feature music from the SHS band, as well as a wreath-laying ceremony, a rifle salute, and a special performance of “Taps.”
All Veterans in attendance at the ceremony will receive a commemorative coin from Summit in appreciation of their service.
Free hot dogs and cold drinks will be available following the event, courtesy of the Summit Elks Lodge. The official sponsor for Summit’s 2015 Memorial Day events is the Mayor’s Fourth of July and Celebration Committee.
