End-of-life care discussed at Springfield Library

The Springfield Free Public Library will offer a presentation on “Practitioner Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment” to inform members of the public about how recently passed legislation in New Jersey provides for better protection of patient preferences for end-of-life care. The program will take place from 6:00 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the library’s Donald B. Palmer Museum. The speaker on this topic, Dr. Jeanne Kerwin, is the manager of the Ethics and Palliative Care program at Overlook Hospital in Summit, a service that provides more than 800 beside consultations each year for patients and their families faced with making difficult decisions about serious illness and end-of-life care.

In addition to her extensive involvement in the fields of ethics and end-of-life care, Dr. Kerwin is a faculty member of Drew University’s graduate program in Medical Humanities and she holds a certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities from Columbia University. She is also a faculty scholar in the Palliative Care Education and Practice program of Harvard Medical School.

This program is free and open to all members of the general public. Those wishing to attend this are requested to register by calling Becky Seasholtz at Bayada Home Health Care in Westfield at 908 789-1717.
