LINDEN — At the Nov. 25 Linden Board of Education meeting, Matthew Tohon was recognized and honored for his achievements as the 2014 USA Paralympics All American Track and Field in the 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1500 meters.
It has been five years since Matthew began his sports career, participating in multiple national and international competitions, as well as local marathons. This past July, he participated in his fourth National Junior Disability Championships that took place in Ames, Iowa, in which he gained first place in nineteen of his events, according to a release by the BOE.
Then in August, he represented the USA and participated in his second International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Junior World Championships games that took place in Stoke Mandeville, England, in which he received a bronze medal for the 1500-meter wheelchair race.
This past September, he participated in his second Westchester Paratriathlon, in Rye, NY.
Currently, Matthew is training weekly to prepare for the next National Junior Disability Championships as well as for the next IWAS Junior World Championship games which will take place in the Netherlands. These events will both be held next summer, 2015.
