CRANFORD MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Connor Katz, varsity football

“Connor recorded two strong efforts in the month of November, accounting for nearly 400 yards offense and six touchdowns in the last two games. In a solid win over Summit, Connor threw one touchdown pass and ran for two touchdowns to lead his team to a big comeback win over Summit. The next week in Irvington, Connor threw three touchdowns and led the team in rushing in a hard-fought one-point playoff loss.” — Coach Erik Rosenmeier

What is your favorite part of playing football?
“The competition. I love the feeling of winning, but hate the feeling of losing even more. I love the feeling of getting back to work on a Monday after a big win or a hard-fought loss.”

In what way has the sport benefited you?
“In so many ways. It gave me 80 brothers and close friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life, as well as teaching me many life skills like perseverance, teamwork, handling both success and failure, just to name a few.”

What is your biggest challenge when competing?
“Controlling my emotions. I’m a very passionate competitor, to say the least, and I feel like you can see that in the way I play. In football, this is usually a good thing, but as a quarterback, you need to control your emotions more than any other position, because you have to think so much as quarterback and your emotions can get in the way of that.”

How do you get ready for a football game?
“Before the game, I will usually listen to music by myself and think about my reads and progressions and try to envision myself having success.”

What’s your favorite memory of this season?
“Our win over Summit. Statistically, I had better games, but I think that is the game we played the best as a team and really gelled. No one really gave us a chance to win and we completely dominated them. It is a win I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Who are your favorite professional athletes?
“Drew Brees and Patrick Mahomes. I’m a big Drew Brees fan, because he is so accurate and makes really good decisions with the ball. He is also a tremendous leader and always handles himself the right way. I like Patrick Mahomes because he is so exciting to watch and does some things that are just
ridiculous.”

What is your favorite subject in school?
“History. It is interesting to see how everything from the past affects the present and how often mistakes from the past are repeated.”

What other hobbies do you have?
“Listening to music, lifting weights and hanging out with my friends and family. I love listening to music because it helps me deal with stress. Lifting is another productive way of dealing with stress and I also become a better athlete while doing it. I’m fortunate enough to have a great support system that motivates me and allows me to relax and have fun when I’m with them.”

What are your plans after high school?
“To play college football somewhere. I have a Division 1 offer to play at Georgetown right now and I’m talking to some other schools. I have always dreamed of playing Division 1 since I was little and I am determined to make that dream come true. In college, I plan on studying marketing or something else business-related as well as communications, to hopefully one day become a sports broadcaster.”
