CLARK, NJ — Alyssa Grasso’s class at the Clark Preschool got into the holiday spirit with a hands-on learning activity that combined festive fun with important early childhood skills. Students worked together to make “reindeer food” that families can sprinkle on the grass to help guide the reindeer to their homes.
Using a simple recipe made with oats, glitter “sprinkles” and a special splash of love, students followed along as each step was carefully explained and modeled. Children took turns scooping, pouring, shaking and mixing the ingredients, practicing early math skills such as counting, measuring and one-to-one correspondence. The class counted scoops and shakes together, reinforcing number sense in a meaningful and engaging way.
Beyond math, the activity focused heavily on social-emotional learning. Students practiced self-regulation, which is what is taught in our Tools of the Mind, by waiting patiently for their turn, following directions and watching their peers participate. They demonstrated growing independence, focus and cooperation while working together as a group. Teachers supported children in ensuring they followed the classrooms.
Once the reindeer food was complete, it was packaged to take home. This fun activity encouraged teamwork, responsibility and confidence, while also creating a memorable holiday experience for the students.
Grasso’s preschool class continues to show that learning can be meaningful, magical and fun during the holiday season.
