Leonore (a/k/a Lee) Harelik (nee Schiffman) of Springfield, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Overlook Hospital. She was born and raised in the Bronx, N.Y. After graduating from Hunter College of The City University of New York with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she worked for many years for the Federal Government. She was a writer and broadcaster for the Voice Of America, an administrative assistant for the National Labor Relations Board and a case intaker for the Internal Revenue Service. In 1959, she married her beloved husband Melvin (a/k/a Mel) and they moved to Irvington, NJ and then moved to Springfield, NJ in 1972. She and her family were amongst the earliest members of Congregation Israel of Springfield, where she was an active member, including a past President of the Sisterhood and a past President of the Senior Set. In 2012, she was honored by the Congregation with the “Aishet Chayil” Woman of Valor award. She was also a past President and lifetime member of B’nai B’rith Women (a/k/a Jewish Women International). In addition, she was active in the Township of Springfield and involved in numerous civic projects. Further, she was a trained opera singer, with the highest range of voice, a coloratura. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Melvin Harelik, who passed away December 19, 2005. She is survived by her devoted daughter Clara Harelik, her dear son-in-law Jay Mevorah and her three adored grandchildren, Cole, Michael and Cayla, all of Springfield. Funeral services were held on June 15, 2014. Arrangements were by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield, N.J. 07081.
