Elderly woman found dead in fire

A 65-year-old woman was found dead on the first floor after fire ravaged a home on Brookside Place in Cranford on April 12.

CRANFORD, NJ — A 65-year-old woman was found dead after a fire at 43 Brookdale Place in Cranford on Friday, April 12, the Cranford Police Department said in a recent release.

Deborah Meehan was discovered on the first floor, were the fire is believed to have started. Cranford police and fire crews arrived at the house in the northeast section of the township after receiving a call at approximately 3 p.m. and found the two-story, single-family house heavily involved with fire.

The cause of Meehan’s death was not immediately known, according to the release, and the body was transferred to the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy was to be performed.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental, the release said. An investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force is ongoing. The Cranford Fire Department received assistance from several neighboring municipalities to get the blaze under control.
