LEADER-maleathlete-CThe team is in its second year of existence under coach Carlos Vega. The Farmers got off to a 6-6 start in their sophomore season, bettering their first-year record of 4-12 and beating some established teams in the process.

How’s the season going so far?
“This is only our second year having a volleyball team. I’ve played since freshman year, I came to Union High School last year from North Bergen, but for everyone else this is new. For a second-year team, we’re beating schools that have had a team longer than we can remember. The teams we play, they’ve gone to states and counties, and we can keep up with them.”

What’s the makeup of the team?
“We have a bunch of freshmen. I’m a senior, a couple of other varsity starters are seniors, so having freshmen is good because they’re going to be the future of the team. When we go, they can take our spots.”

How did it feel to help build a new team from the ground up?
“I actually really enjoyed it, I enjoyed it more than a school that already had a team. It was more of a challenge, and we were able to be the underdogs.”

What are your goals for the season?
“Last year, we went 4-12. So far, this season a lot better than it was last year — the team is a lot stronger, we’re playing better. But our goal, honestly, is just to have a fun season, and to end up with a positive record that’s better than last year.”

Do you have any plans for life after Union High School?
“I’m going into the National Guard, and then I’m planning on going
to Rutgers after.”

What are you watching on Netflix right now?
“I actually just finished all the shows I’ve been watching: ‘Prison Break,’ ‘That ’70s Show,’ ‘Orange is the New Black.’ I’m also looking forward to Game of Thrones.”

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one object with you, what would it be?
“I’d bring Donald Trump with me, and save America.”
