GARWOOD, NJ — Things got a little noisy last Friday night in Garwood as The Crossroads welcomed legendary hair metal-era rockers LA Guns to their stage.
Anchored by core members Phil Lewis on lead vocals and Steve Riley on drums, the quartet delivered almost two scorching hours of their most popular hits and a few surprises along the way. Rounding out the current lineup was bassist Kenny Kweens and lead guitarist Michael Grant, providing the necessary thundering sound and swagger that is so badly missing from anemic, modern-day rock and roll acts. With Lewis taking a brief mid-set break, Grant and the others launched into an impromptu Prince tribute, delighting the packed house with a sweeping rendition of the recently deceased artist’s iconic “Purple Rain.”
Opening the evening with a solid hour of classic rock covers was New Jersey’s own Edgar Cayce Band. A regional favorite of live music lovers for decades, the power trio cranked out more than a dozen tunes by familiar rock radio staples like Pink Floyd and Van Halen, occasionally rivaling the stellar musicianship of the original recordings.
