Roselle Catholic’s record-setting sprint medley relay team ran off with plenty of accolades from the school’s annual spring athletic convocation.
Mike Cianci, Tyler Tucker, Matthew Boscia and Nael Jean-Jacques set the school record of 3:37.5 at the 2013 Union County Relay Championships held at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield.
Tucker, who ran 22.6 in the 200 meter leg of the relay, was tabbed Most Valuable Player of the Lions’ spring track team.
Record-setting shot putter Adia Ledbetter, a Linden resident, garnered MVP recognition for the girls’ squad.
Cianci, also a Linden resident, received the Lyons Memorial Scholarship, established by Peter Lyons, a 1973 Roselle Catholic graduate.
The award presented to Cianci, who captured Union County Conference-Valley Division titles in the 200 meter dash and 400 intermediate hurdles, is based on sportsmanship, personal integrity, discipline and teamwork in recognition of the values associated with the RC insignia. Cianci ran 51.4 in the 400 meter portion of the record-breaking relay performance.
A Roselle resident, Jeans-Jacques received the Gagliano Scholarship, whch is presented to a member of the track and field team who embodies the characteristics and integrity that legendary RC track coach Frank Gagliano – who went on to gain national prominence – constantly sought from his student-athletes.
Jean-Jacques contributed a 23.4 effort in the 200 meters to the SMR record, while Boscia clocked a 1:59.3 in the 800. Boscia and teammate Sean Kip were recognized at the convocation for finishing their scholastic careers with 12 varsity awards, four years of varsity cross country, indoor track and spring track.
Another member of the track program, Khalil Davis, shared the Matthes Memorial Award with fellow senior Liz Delpino, a soccer player from Union.
With Carl Matthes’ family in attendance, the Carl Matthes Award is presented in memory of a man noted for his total dedication to the Roselle Catholic community. The award is presented to an RC student who’s notably demonstrated dedication, perseverance, sportsmanship and commitment.
In addition, MVP trophies were also presented to Matthew Marques for baseball, Samantha Ramirez for softball and Sean Cohen, a Roselle Park resident, for boys’ volleyball.
RC runner Christine Demetillo, a junior and second-year varsity performer in spring track, sang the National Anthem.
The RC Campus Minister opened the Convocation with a prayer and RC Principal and President Dr. Robert Stickles delivered opening remarks.
Dr. Stickles helped present scholar-athlete medals to any student-athlete from any spring sports team who made the honor roll during the third marking period. More than half of Roselle Catholic’s student-athletes from the spring season achieved honor roll status.
Roselle Catholic assistant principal Patrick Hagan presented the MVP trophies at the conclusion of the convocation, which was the 45th for RC Athletic Director Joe Skrec. Skrec, who’s concluding his 15th year as AD, is assisted by his wife, Laura Skrec.
