The Roselle Catholic High School athletic department’s pink theme continued last Tuesday.
Less than 24 hours after spectators “pinked out” The Lions’ Den during the RC volleyball program’s annual Spike Breast Cancer event, the Lions’ girls’ soccer players all sported pink socks for their game against Brearley High School of Kenilworth on Chakey Field.
It marks the second year in a row the RC girls’ soccer program made a sartorial statement on the pitch.
“While the volleyball team has had the spike breast cancer game, we had some girls last year on the team that came up with the idea of doing our own awareness to kick breast cancer,” said Roselle Catholic coach Gary Carvalho, who’s in his 11th season at the helm.
“The girls enjoyed it so much last year that we decided to do it again this year. Although we couldn’t raise money we did bring awareness to the cause. The girls all went out and purchased their own pink socks.”
Despite the bright pink socks, the RC soccer team lost to Brearley, one of the contenders for the Union County Conference’s Valley Division title.
The RC coach said it was still worth the effort to support a good cause and worth the special request the Lions made to the soccer officials.
“The refs gave us a hard time because the socks weren’t white, but we persevered,” Carvalho said.
Roselle Catholic bounced back from the setback to post a 2-0 victory against division rival Benedictine Academy of Elizabeth last Thursday at Phil Rizzuto Park in Hillside.
Sophomore Kayla Whitaker and freshman Alivia Pitts scored goals for the Lions, who defeated Benedictine for the second time this season. Senior Ema Dias assisted on a goal and junior goalie Adia Ledbetter made six saves for the shutout.
Roselle Catholic improved to 6-4. The Lions were No. 9 in the latest edition of The Star-Ledger’s rankings of non-public girls soccer teams in the state.
