UNION FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Lyric Scott, junior, field hockey

“Lyric is one of my captains and a three-year starter for the Union Varsity Field Hockey Program. Lyric is a great student athlete, who is a leader on and off the field. She has two goals and an assist, which has led Union to a 3-0 start to the season. She has great stick work and communication with her teammates on the field. I look forward to seeing what the next two seasons have in store for Lyric Scott.”

— Union field hockey coach Adriane Damino

How important was it to get off to a good start this season?
It has been so important to get off to a good start this season because we have always been the underdogs, and it really has paid off. Every time we have a game, our opponents know they will get a run for their money against us.

You already have a couple of goals this season. Do you feel more responsibility to go forward from midfield?
As the first line of defense, I do feel more responsibility because our forward line is usually the girls who will put the ball in the cage, but also the people who have to be the strongest when our opponents try to come through our center. We have good competition this year, so it’s always important for the forwards to play stronger offensively and defensively.

What do you feel the team needs to accomplish this year to consider it a successful season?
To have a successful season, the team needs to accomplish trusting each other, being able to work together and not forgetting the fundamentals of hockey when we step on that field.

You’ve also played basketball. How do you compare the two sports?
The movement of the game is very similar. To move defense in both sports, you make cuts to the ball, changes in speed and off-the-ball movement.

What do you do to relax, other than sports?
When I’m not playing hockey, to relax I watch Netflix and lie down with my dog.

What do you like most about the new school year?
What I like most about the new school year is that you can get a fresh start, athletically or academically. You get another chance to be the person you aspire to.

Is there any particular subject you enjoy more than others?
My favorite subjects have been math and science, or English and history for such a long time. I’m naturally more interested and better in those subjects.
