CRANFORD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Christina Barlik, varsity shot putter

“Christina Barlik has been a natural leader and tough competitor ever since she joined the Cranford track and field team. She gives 100 percent in every practice and competition, and provides the younger athletes with a positive role model. She recently capped off her best season by setting a school record in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet 10.75 inches, and qualifying for her third consecutive NJ Meet of Champions.”

What do you enjoy in your free time?
“When I have free time, I like to spend time with my family and friends, going on day trips, taking pictures and relaxing around the house.”

Who is your biggest inspiration?
“My biggest inspiration is my middle school teacher, who pushed me in school and taught me to believe in myself. I saw firsthand what an effective teacher can do for their students. My middle school teacher was loving, caring and always there for her students. After having her as a teacher, she made me realize that I wanted to become a teacher, too.”

Do you have any pet peeves?
“One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone has a candy wrapper or something that can make a scratching and rubbing noise; it irritates me.”

What is your favorite food?
“Chicken Parmesan.”

What is your favorite line from a movie?
“Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something, not even me. Alright? You dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.” — Chris Gardner, from “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

What is your favorite song?
“That’s a hard question. Not a day goes by that I do not listen to music. I would have to say my favorite song is from The Lumineers: Ophelia.”

What is your dream job?
“Being a professional photographer that travels the world.”

What is your nickname?
“Krysia is my Polish name that my family and close friends call me.”

What are your biggest accomplishments?
“Athletically, my biggest accomplishments were when I broke both the winter and spring shot put records for Cranford High School and also being able to compete at New Balance Nationals Indoor Track and Field Meet. All three events were surreal moments that I will never forget!”
