All 17 Union County football teams scheduled to play Sept. 15; Rare weekend when none will play on Saturday

Big matchup: Westfield at Ridge, a battle of 1-0 Watchung Division teams with the Westfield Blue Devil defense attempting to halt the Ridge Red Devil offense

All 17 Union County football schools are scheduled to play Friday, Sept. 15, which will be a rare weekend when none are to play on Saturday.

There are 12 games, including five featuring two Union County squads.

Perhaps the most high profile matchup of the weekend is Westfield at Ridge, which is a battle of 1-0 Watchung Division squads. Ridge won the Watchung Division and North 2, Group 5 undefeated in 2013, while Westfield won the Watchung Division and North 2, Group 5 undefeated in both 2015 and 2016.

Westfield opened with a 12-7 win at Linden Saturday (Sept. 9), while Ridge won at Montgomery 34-14 Friday (Sept. 8).

Westfield defeated Ridge the past three years, but the Red Devils managed to score points against the Blue Devils in all three games: Westfield won 21-14 in 2014, 37-13 in 2015 and 35-21 in 2016.

Westfield defensive coordinator Ken Miller has his work cut out for him this week.

Westfield has won a state-best 26 in a row, including 20 straight regular season games. The last time Westfield lost a regular season game on the road was Oct. 2, 2014 when the Blue Devils were edged in overtime at Linden 15-14.

Westfield has won 11 straight regular season road games.

The last time Ridge defeated Westfield was in 2013 when the Red Devils downed the Blue Devils 35-28 in a first round North 2, Group 5 clash.

The last time Westfield lost a regular season road game in regulation time was Oct. 4, 2013 at Hunterdon Central 34-7.
