The Roselle Catholic volleyball team continued its pursuit of a second straight Union County Tournament title on Saturday morning with a straight set victory against the third-seeded Linden Tigers in The Lions’ Den.

Behind 18 assists, 10 service points and nine digs from senior Jessica Ciandella and eight kills and five service points from Calli Scheuermann, second-seeded RC defeated Linden, 25-18 and 25-13.

The defending champion Lions advanced to Tuesday night’s UCT semifinals. RC will face third-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood at 6:00 p.m. at Johnson High School in Clark. The UCT championship match takes place at Kean University on Friday.

Seniors Keyarah Newton and Melissa Sheehan contributed 10 digs apiece to the RC attack. Sheehan also served seven points for the Lions, who won their fourth consecutive match and improved to 20-6.

Ally Mroczek added four kills, three assists and two digs to the RC attack.

In UCT JV action, Roselle Catholic, the 11th seed, upset sixth-seeded New Providence on Tuesday to advance to the tournament quarterfinals.

But the JV Lions were eliminated by Union Catholic on Friday in Scotch Plains.   The UCT loss to the Lions came the day after Roselle Catholic’s junior varsity knocked off the rival Vikings in consecutive games in a regular-season match in The Lions’ Den.
