CRANFORD – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced that Union County College soccer player Maya Lawler, of Cranford, was named to the 2018 NJCAA Division 3 First Team All-American. Lawler is the first women’s soccer player at Union to be named to an NJCAA All-America team for two consecutive years.
In 2017 she was named Second Team All-America.
Lawler, a defender for Union, had a standout season. For a second year she was named the NJCAA Region 19 Division 3 Player of the Year.
This season she had 23 points with 10 goals and three assists. She helped bring the team to a national third place finish this season.
“Maya is a talented athlete and a super-star in the classroom,” said Union’s Head Women’s Soccer Coach Angie Correa.
“She is a leader and role model for her teammates. She has an explosive step that is hard to find in an athlete.”
The Women’s Soccer team had a fantastic season. For the first time in the history of the program, they competed in the NJCAA Women’s Soccer National Tournament in Rockville, IL, where they finished third in the nation.
During the tournament, the Lady Owls were awarded the National Tournament Sportsmanship Plaque which is given to the team whose actions on and off the field have demonstrated fairness, respect, honesty, unselfishness and responsibility.
The team finished the season with an overall record of 15-2-1, a Region 19 record of 7-1 and a Garden State Athletic Conference record of 6-1.
