Aldan Oviter Markson of Maplewood, NJ died after a long illness at age 89 on June 16, 2019. He was a loving husband to his wife, Patricia of 47 years, a father, grandfather, attorney, and judge. He was a congregants of Synagogue B’nai Israel.
Aldan was born in New York City and raised in Caldwell, NJ. He received a BA from Dartmouth College in 1951, a LLB from Columbia University in 1954 where
he was a Harlen Fisk Stone Scholar and long time judge for the University’s Moot Court. He Served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 and was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey in 1957. In his sixties he returned to school and received a Master of Law Taxation from New York University in 1987 and in his late seventies he was admitted to the Bar in Ohio in 2010. He practiced law until he surrendered his license at age eighty-eight.
After service in the army, he practiced law in the Borough of Kenilworth where he represented individual clients and small businesses in the ordinary matters of life for over 60 years. He was the recipient of the AV Permanent Rated Award for over twenty years of exceptional practice in the area of real estate and a Certified Mediator for the Superior Court of NJ.
In addition to his private practice, he served the people in the Borough of Kenilworth for twenty-four years; first as Municipal Prosecutor, then as Borough Attorney and then as Municipal Judge.
He was engaged in Maplewood as a former board member of the Durand- Hedden House and Garden Association, the organization he assisted in forming; and as a past member of the Citizenʼs Budget Advisory Committee.
A man of faith, he was a past member of the board of the Institute for Judaeo Christian Studies at Seton Hall University and received the Shalom Award from the University.
Aldan lived a complete and fulfilling life with few regrets. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia Hynes and his children and their spouses Carol and Burton Goldfield, John and Laura Markson, Jennifer Markson and Jeffrey Batzli, Stephen Markson, and Paul and Kelly Markson; and his grand children Amelia and Noah Markson, Alec Goldfield and Lauren Tatsuto, Sienna, Gabriel, and Donovan Batzli, and Hunter and Emma Markson. His daughter Emily Ross predeceased him.
