The Brearley girls’ basketball team is off to one of its finest starts in some time.
On Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Kenilworth the Bears produced an impressive 46-33 win over Benedictine Academy of Elizabeth in Union County Conference-Sky Division play.
Brearley won its third straight to improve to 8-1 overall.
The Bears also lead the Sky Division standings at 5-0.
Benedictine had a six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-3 overall.
Benedictine is now 2-2 in the Sky Division.
Brearley has another big game on Friday, Jan. 20, which will be its first of two against Sky Division rival Kent Place.
Kent Place also improved to 8-1 overall on Jan. 17 after winning at Sky Division foe Roselle Park 54-11.
Kent Place is 4-0 in the Sky Division.
Brearley will host Kent Place on Jan. 20, which is a makeup date after the teams were snowed out on Jan. 10, which was to be a 6 p.m. tipoff.
Brearley is scheduled to play at Kent Place on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. in Summit.
Before Brearley and Kent Place clash for the first time on Jan. 20, both squads have UCC-crossover contests scheduled to be played against Valley Division teams the day before on Thursday, Jan. 19. Brearley is to play at St. Mary’s of Elizabeth (2-7) at 4 p.m., while Kent Place is to host Union Catholic (7-3) at 4:30 p.m.
St. Mary’s was in the Sky Division last year.
In Brearley’s division triumph over Benedictine Jan. 17, Sydney David scored 13 points to pace the Bears, who built a 35-16 advantage at intermission.
Jennah Hudeen added 12 points and five rebounds and Sofia Lospinoso eight and five. Micaela Etlinger had six points, four assists and three steals and Hanna Bondalo five assists.
