Union girls’ soccer off to fine 6-1 start; Farmers play at undefeated Westfield (7-0) Sept. 28

Three weeks into the season and we have three solid Group 4 schools vying for supremacy in Union County. All competing for the Union County Conference’s Watchung Division championship, Westfield began the week 6-0 overall, Union 6-1 and Scotch Plains 5-1.
As of Monday, the Watchung Division standings had Westfield first at 2-0, Scotch Plains second at 2-1 and Union third at 1-1.
Union’s only loss going into today’s big 4 p.m. division game at Westfield was a 2-1 setback at Scotch Plains on Sept. 16.
Westfield handed Scotch Plains its only loss, defeating the Raiders 1-0 Scotch Plains on Sept. 9. The Blue Devils have outscored their first six foes by an impressive 17-0 margin. Westfield was scheduled to host Kearny Tuesday.

Westfield defeated Kearny 7-1 Tuesday at home and is now 7-0 and has outscored the opposition by a 24-1 count.

The Farmers opened with four wins that saw them outscore the opposition by a wide 19-4 combined score. Union followed the Scotch Plains loss with consecutive shutout home victories over Kent Place 3-0 on Sept. 20 and over division foe Cranford 2-0 last Saturday.
Union standout junior forward Kayla Miller-People leads the Farmers in goals scored with nine, with junior Kayla Lima right behind her with seven. Tied for the team lead in assists with seven were Miller-People and fellow junior forward Nicole Alfano.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlyn Finnerty registered a total of 41 saves in Union’s first seven matches.
