The softball Group 1 state championship game between North 2 champion Roselle Park (26-2) and South Jersey champ Gloucester (23-3) scheduled to be played at Kean University’s Cougar Field in Union on Saturday, June 2 at 2:30 p.m. was rained out.
The game will be made up on Sunday, June 3 at Kean at 10 a.m.
NJSIAA officials were hopeful that the other two scheduled state championship games for June 2 were still going to be played on that day.
The plan now is to play the second and third scheduled state championship games on Saturday, June 2 and the other four – beginning with Roselle Park vs. Gloucester in the Group 1 final at 10 a.m. – on Sunday, June 3.
Roselle Park’s lone state championship came over Gloucester City 2-0 in the 2003 Group 1 final. Both teams traveled to Toms River twice to play that game – the first game at Toms River North on a Saturday morning was halted by rain in the fourth inning.
The teams came back to play the game over from the beginning on the following Tuesday night at Toms River East.
Roselle Park won 2-0 behind a three-hitter tossed by junior right hander Becky Riccitelli. Erica Ollinick drove in the game’s first run in the bottom of the fifth and Steph Kirste the second in the sixth.
That 2003 Roselle Park team, which also captured the Union County Tournament championship for just the second time and first time since 1982, finished 24-1-1. The Panthers concluded with a 16-game winning streak and produced 22 shutouts.
This year’s Roselle Park team, which won the UCT for the fourth time and for the first time since repeating in 2004, set the program record for wins in a season at 26 and – hopefully – still counting.
