Roselle football preview: Rams new coach Williams anxious to see his first team succeed

ROSELLE – Very pleased with the skill position players he has in his first year at the helm, new coach James Williams is anxious to see his Rams succeed in 2013.

“If our offensive line holds up, I think we can be something special,” Williams said.

That is usually the case for every team.

Roselle is seeking to bounce back from a 2-8 campaign that followed back-to-back playoff seasons for the first time since 1989 and 1990.

The Rams concluded the first pre-season of the Williams era with their game scrimmage at Snyder of Jersey City.

“Our offense is running smoothly,” Williams said. “Defensively, we’re still working on some things. We pursued the ball well.”

Leading the spread offense will be returning senior quarterback Tyrone Crutchfield, who is a three-year starter.

“Tyrone is a true quarterback, a really good player,” Williams said. “He can really put the ball out there.”

Also at quarterback is senior Jason McRae, who started at tight end last year.

“Jason is a good leader,” Williams said. “He can run and throw and is very smart.”

Darryn Canady, a junior, is also a returning starter at running back.

“Darryn is a true 6-1, 230,” Williams said. “He can run around you or over you. He has speed and power.”

Williams added that returning starter Jean Athis, “has good hands” at wide receiver and that Brearley transfer Kharyi Hudeen, a running back, is, “a very special back who really sees the field. He can cut on a dime and has blazing speed.”

On defense, Williams is fortunate enough to have returning starters that include Ashley and Canady at linebacker and Athis and McRae in the secondary.

“Those players have the experience and know what to expect,” Williams said. “Ashley and Canady are big guys who can run sideline-to-sideline and can also read offenses.”

Roselle opens at home Saturday, Sept. 14 vs. Mid-State 38 Conference-Raritan Division foe DelawareValley. Kickoff at Arminio Field is 1 p.m.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Williams said.
