The Roselle Catholic boys’ basketball team captured its first state championship Saturday night by defeating two-time defending champion St. Anthony 48-44 in the Non-Public, B state championship game at Toms River North High School’s Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
The Lions improved to 23-5 with its sixth straight victory and will next compete in the Tournament of Champions for the first time.
St. Anthony had a 10-game winning streak snapped and finished at 28-2. It was the first loss by the Friars to an NJSIAA team in three years.
Exactly three Saturday nights ago Roselle Catholic was stunned by Union 64-63 in a Union County Tournament quarterfinal at Johnson in Clark and thwarted in its attempt – as the top seed – to capture its first county championship.
More to come.
