All 4 Union County wrestlers defeated in NJSIAA Tournament quarterfinals; Union’s Brown edged 3-2 at heavyweight

For the fifth straight year and seventh in the last eight there will not be a wrestler from a Union County school that wins a state championship.

All four Union County school wrestlers that reached the NJSIAA Tournament’s quarterfinals March 5 were defeated.

They will all now try to win in the wrestlebacks to try to finish among the top eight wrestlers in their weight classes and earn medals for doing so.

Union senior heavyweight Dave Brown was edged by Joe Longobardi of River Dell 3-2.

Cranford senior Niko Cappello was nipped by Kyle Murphy of Bridgewater-Raritan 1-0 at 182.

At 145, Cranford junior Vince Concina was blanked by Michael O’Malley of Hasbrouck Heights 6-0 and New Providence senior Tyler Gazaway was defeated by Mohammed Farhan of Clifton 6-4.

For Gazaway it was his first loss of the year after a 40-0 start.
