  1. It is certainly appalling the conditions of some fire equipment, however, it is also important to remark when was the last time that Hillside had a major fire? Some of the overhead at the fire department must be eliminated, since they are some of the highest paid firemen statewide, as a matter of fact, the salaries and fringe benefits of the chief and his bunch of unnecessary assistants and deputy chiefs are up there with the highest paid. I also learned that given the instability in certain key positions they have been raking thousands of dollars for overtime billing; one of those dudes responsible for fire prevention inspection allegedly billed for ot even while out of state in FL where he owns a property and travel frequently. In fact, that department must be abolished and outsource fire services to neighboring communities, since they have all the right equipment, they are a very short distance from Hillside anyway.

  2. No one mentioned the safety of the firefighters working with outdated equipment in disrepair, because it is their job to put their lives on the line every day. Ms. Linn I pray the next “MAJOR FIRE” isn’t your home. Thomas Hanlein retired fire Capt. 1966-1999

  3. @Linda Lynn, The fact that Hillside hasn’t had a major fire is not the issue here! The issue is that the apparatus that we rely on to do our job, which is to protect life and property, is in serious disrepair or doesn’t work at all!! The safety of the residents and the firefighters are what’s in jeopardy! If we are to do our jobs then the department and township needs to their job and give us the tools to do our job! The fact that Hillside hasn’t had a major fire is testament to the great job that the firefighters do to keep the resident’s safe!!!!

  4. It would be nice if these overpaid unionized government workers (heroes??) got off their butts and fixed some of the damage themselves instead of working their second jobs or making chili or playing cards. They may not be able to do it all but something. You are correct Linda, they should disband this overpaid department and outsource.

  5. @ Linda Lynn,@Dennis DeCoster, Linda Lynn and Dennis Decoster both of you don’t know what it is to be a firefighter or what it take or what it is that firefighters do and don’t do fact is that paid dept. And volunteer dept are very different and very different on what go’s on in the firehouse , its just like your jobs if you don’t have the tools and the proper equipment to do your job can you do it ! NO I VERY MUCH DOUBT THAT! …LINDA would you like to live in a house that’s falling apart and in bad conditions no you wouldnt I pretty sure of that and I pray and never wish bad upon nobody but hopefully you’ll never need the fire dept, to rescue you out of your house or cut you out of that car or preform CBR on any loved one ,then you’ll realize who’s overpaid or not , Dennis DeCoster you just sound a little bitter, you must of been one of those guys that wanted to be a Firefighter and never made it ask your self this do you eat ?…cause firefighters are human to and need to eat and be hydrated ,…people should think sometimes before the talk s@%#t ……
