1 thought on “Cryan joins attempt to counter marijuana ‘legalization’

  1. Well written article. Thank you for putting the time into this. As a medical Cannabis patient and someone who believes in Cannabis in a Sacramental fashion, I am a huge advocate for full legalization. As someone who resides in “the hood,” or Elizabeth, I find it very difficult to get behind the farce of decriminalization of Cannabis. Instead of making arrests, police officers will now be ticketing small-time consumers. What about the majority of Cannabis users who purchase a 1/2 ounce (14.2 grams), 1 ounce (28.35 grams), or even quarter pounds at a time? There are some heavy Cannabis users who consume an ounce per week and choose to make 1 purchase per month. As with every other industry, there tends to be savings in buying in bulk.

At the same time, those who currently sell, will continue to sell and face the same fate, should they get caught. The Courts will still be flooded with people who can’t afford to pay the fines, which will ultimately lead to arrest warrants being issued.

Personally, I support neither of these bills, as I only see them partially chipping away at the alleged problem, versus creating a real workable solution. Assemblyman Reed Gusciora also sponsored a bill, which I am more inclined to support. The assemblyman’s bill aims to legalize Cannabis, establishes regulatory framework limiting the number of cultivation centers to 2 per legislative district, proposes a lower tax rate, making it much more competitive with the lucrative black market, expands expungements to those caught in possession of over 50 grams and non-violent distribution charges, and provides possibilities for those from poorer communities to enter the market LEGALLY!

Like “gun control” it’s time for serious, “common sense” type talks. It’s time to leave opinions at the door and rely solely on the facts at hand. Not the ones we find convenient at the time. Unfortunately, this is another political hockey puck, and these politicians are all over it! Whether it’s criminalization or legalization, they are only seeing dollar signs, while we pay with our blood, sweat, tears and money!
