Championship game is Sunday at Kean

The 38th annual softball Union County Tournament will continue Saturday with the semifinals at Kean University’s Cougar Field in Union.

At noon it will be third-seeded New Providence vs. second-seeded and two-time defending champion Gov. Livingston in the first semifinal. GL defeated New Providence 9-2 in last year’s final at Kean. That was the first year that New Providence reached the title game.

GL has won five county crowns, winning in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2011 and 2012.

The 2 p.m. semifinal will pit fourth-seeded Johnson vs. top-seeded Westfield. Johnson last won the crown in 1981 and Westfield in 1998. Westfield reached the final two years ago for the first time since 1998, falling to GL 8-1 at Kean.

The championship game will take place at Kean for the fourth straight season on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The junior varsity championship game is set for noon Sunday at Kean, right before the varsity final.

The JV semifinals include fifth-seeded Summit vs. top-seeded Johnson and seventh-seeded Cranford vs. third-seeded Roselle Park. Cranford defeated second-seeded and defending champion GL in the quarterfinals.
