Summit senior standout Iarussi loses first match of season in tie-breaker at 220

Seton Hall Prep senior Brenden Calas of Clark and the junior Balboni brothers of Brearley – John and Joe – advanced to the NJSIAA Tournament semifinals after the standout grapplers won quarterfinal round bouts Saturday.

The semifinals are being contested right now, with the finals set for the last competition on Sunday.

Calas, already a two-time state champion who will continue wrestling at North Carolina State, eged Joe Trovotao of Paramus 2-1 in the 120 quarterfinals.

John Balboni pinned Sonnieboy Blanco of Burlington City in 3:30 in the 160 quarterfinals, while Joe Balboni decisioned Austin Wetterau of Shawnee 13-6 in a 170 quarterfinal.

Undefeated Summit star Anthony Iarussi fell in the 220 quarterfinals by a 2-1 tie-breaker decision to Zack Chakonis of Don Bosco Prep. Iarussi can still wrestle back to finish third at 220.
