Top 4 seeds all made it; Championship game is May 18 at 2 p.m. at Kean

The 38th annual softball Union County Tournament – despite heavy rain in the forecast – will continue Saturday at Kean Universiity’s Cougar Field in Union.

The semifinals include fourth-seeded Johnson vs. top-seeded Westfield at noon, followed by third-seeded New Providence vs. second-seeded and two-time defending champion Gov. Livingston at 2 p.m.

The top four seeds all advanced with Friday home wins. Johnson defeated 12th-seeded Brearley 5-4, Westfield blanked ninth-seeded Cranford 4-0, New Providence downed sixth-seeded Elizabeth 3-2 and GL bested seventh-seeded Roselle Park 4-0.

GL repeated as champions for the first time when it defeated New Providence 9-2 in last year’s championship game at Kean. The Pioneers reached the final for the first time a year ago.

Westfield has not won the UCT since 1998 and Johnson since 1981.

The championship game is scheduled to be played May 18 at Kean at 2 p.m.
