The 19th Annual Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless Basketball Classic tips off Saturday at the Dunn Sport Center in Elizabeth.
Some of the most exciting high school boys’ basketball teams in New Jersey will battle for ranking and take the offense against homelessness.
Since 1981, The Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless has found shelter for homeless and low income households in Greater Union County.
The Classic is a major and vital fundraising event for the Coalition, Union County’s front line organization responding to the growing numbers of homeless families and individuals in our community – working families, families on unemployment, children and those retired or disabled.
The tournament is especially significant this year as the number of homeless people has spiked dramatically given the high unemployment rates and current economic crises. This event has evolved to become one of the premier dates on the increasingly popular New Jersey high school boys’ basketball calendar.
Saturday’s lineup at the Dunn Center:
5 p.m. – The Patrick School vs. Don Bosco Prep
6:45 p.m. – Elizabeth vs. Passaic Tech
8:30 p.m. – St. Mary’s, Elizabeth vs. Scotch Plains
Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for students.
Tickets may be purchased on the Elizabeth Coalition’s website: http://www.theelizabethcoalition.org/ and will also be available at the door on the day of the games.
