Bill “Wiz” Martin, 86, of Bayville, passed away March 14, 2016. He was predeceased by his wife, Florence “Bunnie” McCullough Martin, and his son, William Wade Martin, in 2015. He is survived by his sons Glenn, of Bennington, VT; Jeff, his daughter-in-law Elizabeth and his two granddaughters, Devon and Tess, of Silver Spring, MD; his first wife, Gail Hewson Martin of Washington, D.C.; his step daughter Jeannie McCullough Pinney, her husband Gerald and their two children Frank and Danielle of Westfield; and his step son, Michael McCullough, his wife Betty and their children Brittany and Shane of Beachwood.
Born in 1929 in Linden, Bill graduated Linden High School and attended Hinds Junior College in Mississippi. He attained the rank of sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean War where he served in special services and played halfback for the Marine Corps national champion football team. He later attended William & Mary, graduating in 1955, and was named to the William & Mary football Hall of Fame as part of the legendary 1953 team. He received a M. Ed. from Rutgers and returned to Linden High School where he taught physical education/health and coached football and track for almost 40 years.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 11th at the Linden Methodist Church. Contributions in his memory may be made to the William Wade Martin Memorial Fund, United Methodist Church, 321 N Wood Ave, Linden, NJ 07036.
