WESTFIELD –On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Girls Red swim team competed against the Westfield Area Y’s swim team in Westfield. Westfield proved to be a tough opponent, with the FSPY girls making a valiant effort. In the end, the FSPY girls outscored their opponent 198 to 190 with a number of exciting races and the outcome of the meet determined by the relays.
The FSPY team had 10 first-place finishes across 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18 age groups. Heidi Compton and her twin Allie both achieved first- place finishes in the 11-12 age group for their 100 Yard IM and 50 breastroke swims, respectively, with Grace Cull winning the 50 Yard Butterfly.
In the 13-14 age group, firsts were attained by Sydney VonOehsen (200 Yard IM, 100 Yard Backstroke), Macie Schaper (100 Yard Free) and Caroline McNichol (100 Butterfly). Kate Musso, Jillian Breckenridge and Casey Daudelin touched first in the 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke and 100 Backstroke, respectively, for the 15-18 age groups.
In all, FSPY girls had 31 top- three finishes in the 24 individual events, including second-place finishes by 9-10s Alexa Fazio (100 IM, 50 Back), Nicole Ben-David (50 Free) and Julianna Warren (50 Fly), and a first-place finish by 8/under Leanne Dailey in the 25 Backstroke.
The relay competition had an exciting ending with both the 13-14 and 15-18 teams winning their relays. In the 13-14 age group, the team of VonOehsen, McNichol, Small and Schaper had a close race with under a second separating them from their opponents while the 15-18 FSPY girls team of Casey Daudelin, Amelia Markey, Kate Musso and Lauren Sjonell bested the competition by more than 8 seconds (1:48.41).
