UNION, NJ — A Hillside man driving an SUV containing another adult and four children crashed into a house at the corner of Vauxhall Road and Cedar Avenue in Union on Feb. 9, leaving all six injured and tying up traffic on the thoroughfare for hours, according to police.
The vehicle, driven by Joseph Cajuste, 55, was traveling west on Vauxhall Road near the intersection of Stuyvesant Avenue at about 7:15 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro attempting to turn left onto Stuyvesant, police said in their Feb. 9 release.
Cajuste swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash and continued down Vauxhall Road at an accelerated rate of speed, hitting two other vehicles, then struck the corner of a residence on Cedar Terrace across the street from the Espin Preschool Learning Center, a child day care facility.
Two residents at home at the time of the crash were not injured.
The house was deemed uninhabitable due to the structural damage incurred during the crash. Cajuste and his passengers were transported to UMDNJ in Newark with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Union police said.
Vauxhall Road, also known as State Route 630, between Stuyvesant and Pine avenues, was closed for approximately four hours while the crash scene was processed.
Any witnesses to this crash are asked to call the Union Police Department Traffic Bureau at 908-851-5070.
