On Wednesday, June 10, The Rotary Club of Union hosted its Annual Eloquence Soiree to honor Union High School’s student winners of the Marvin Orella Speech Contest. Also honored that night were Ron Rago Supervisor of the Visual & Performing Arts of the Union Board of Education and Captain Scott A. Davis, Administrative Commander of the Union Police DARE Program, who were presented with the Rotary Excellence in Education Award.

Chaired by Incoming Rotary Club President, Julie D’Aloia, the evening was a huge success attracting Rotary members and their families as well as Union educators, professionals and residents.

After the cocktail hour, guests were privileged to hear the speeches of the three finalists who were not aware of the winning outcome.

After the outstanding orations of the young students, scholarships were handed out to Marlisa Shaw, $2500, Ivana Tiani Tchaye, $1500, and Ivana Tiani Tchaye, $1000.

Next, the honorees had a chance to address the crowd and be thanked for their continuing connection and support of the community.

The evening concluded with a Basket Auction and Super 50/50 which helped to fund the scholarships for our esteemed students. The Union Rotary Club was very excited to have students from Kean’s University’s Rotaract and Union High School’s Interact club to help with the evenings festivities.

Union Rotary initiated this event to challenge and reward the students of Union High School and also thanked the community for lending its support of this cause.

The club welcomes any member of the community who might like to join their group in putting “Service above Self.” Meetings are held every Thursday at the Suburban Country Club at 12:15 p.m. For more information contact Sharon Patel at 908-964-6422 or find them on Facebook at facebook.com/unionrotary.
