Furniture and other debris litter the leaf-strewn lawn of a house on Warwick Road in Summit, where a Nov. 30 blaze left a single-family home severely damaged by fire and smoke.
SUMMIT, NJ — A Warwick Road residence in Summit suffered significant fire and smoke damage from a Nov. 30 blaze that was extinguished in less than an hour, city officials said in a release.
An elderly occupant of the home was not present at the time of the blaze, officials said.
Summit firefighters responded to a report of black smoke coming from the windows of a single-family home at about noon and arrived to find a fully-involved fire on the first floor. After neighbors reported that the elderly resident did not answer when they knocked and rang the doorbell, firefighters immediately began to search the house.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the first floor and it was declared under control at approximately 12:44 p.m.
“Our firefighters were able to determine that the owner of the property was not in the residence, and still effectively knock down the fire,” Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers said. “There were no reported injuries to responding firefighters.”
The Summit Fire Department was assisted by the Summit police and the first aid squad. Mutual aid was provided by the Millburn, Springfield, Union, Cranford, Westfield and Roselle fire departments. Station coverage was provided by Elizabeth and Linden fire departments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
