SUMMIT — Joachim Messing, Director of the Waksman Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University, will speak to the Old Guard of Summit at its Tuesday, March 10 meeting. The subject of his address is “Biomass as a Source of Energy.”

As a source of energy, biomass is biological material derived from plant-based substances. It can come from virgin wood, high energy crops, residues, food and industrial waste.

Fossil fuels add to the atmosphere carbon absorbed millions of years ago; biomass only adds carbon it has recently absorbed and is renewable. Messing will address the wisdom of using biomass as a source of energy, particularly where fossil fuels are not readily accessible, having in mind that biomass is also an important source of food, feed and building material.

All age 50-plus active men are invited to attend the Tuesday morning meetings of the Summit Area Old Guard. Meetings are held at the New Providence Municipal Center, 360 Elkwood Ave. A coffee hour starts at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. business meeting brightened by singing and humor. The speaker begins at 10:30 a.m.

Old Guard members participate in sports, bridge, hikes, trips, plays, concerts and other cultural events. Call Jim Hewitt at 908-233-5507 for more information or visit www.summitoldguard.org.
