Junior League to bring community groups together for ‘Kids For Kids,’ a children’s volunteer event

MILLBURN — Community groups are joining forces in Millburn next month for a children’s volunteering event to help youngsters in need.

‘Kids For Kids,’ organized by the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills, Inc., brings together local groups and children for a morning of hands-on volunteering and fun at the George Bauer Community Center in Taylor Park, Millburn, on Saturday, March 7.

Contributing community groups include Short Hills-Millburn Newcomers Club, Girl Scouts of America, Essex County Prosecutors Office, Hartshorn Elementary School, Deerfield Elementary School, Wyoming Elementary School, Rent Party Back Pack Pals, Orange School District, Maplewood – South Orange School District, Cleveland School, Millburn High School Key Club, BookBGone, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Essex County, Family Intervention Services, and our three financial sponsors: D & B, X-Change Financial Access and Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

“This event has continued to be an ongoing success for JLOSH,” said JLOSH President Kelly Sandler of Union, “an event that focuses on children and their contribution to our efforts hopefully encourages voluntarism at an early age and helps them develop into future civic leaders.”

The activities children aged six to eleven years will be able to take part in include: sorting & organizing donated books for re-distribution to local kids in need; filling bags with healthy afterschool snacks for programs servicing homeless and at-risk youth; making giggle bags and no sew blankets for pediatric patients at St. Barnabas; and meeting and supporting the 2013-2014 winner’s of JLOSH’s ‘The Littlest Volunteer Contest’, a contest that awards $100 to kids’ ideas for helping improve their community.

Donations of nut-free breakfast bars, new underwear and socks and gently used books for infants through tweens may be brought to the event.

The JLOSH ‘Kids For Kids’ event goes a long way to helping children in need, while teaching kids and adults about the benefits of volunteering, and bringing together a host of community organizations.

‘Kids For Kids’ takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 7, at George Bauer Community Center in Taylor Park, 100 Main Street, Millburn.
