UNION COUNTY- Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in connection with the armed robbery of a Kenilworth coffee shop last week, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park said yesterday.
The robbery took place at approximately 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 inside the Dunkin’ Donuts at the intersection of Boulevard and North Michigan Avenue, according to Kenilworth Police Department Detective Sergeant Jim Grady, who is investigating the case. It was about that time when an unknown man entered the shop, brandished a black semi-automatic handgun, and directed a male and female employee to the back of the store, where he ordered them to open a safe, Grady said.
The employees were unable to open the safe, so the suspect reportedly directed them back to the front of the store and held a gun to the female employee’s head while ordering the male employee to put money from the cash registers into a bag. The suspect also pointed the gun at a customer when that person attempted to call 911, Grady said.
The man subsequently exited the store, ran east down Boulevard to an area between two buildings approximately 50 yards away, and entered a white, four-door vehicle with black rims and tinted windows that had been parked there. The vehicle then sped away.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male estimated to be in his mid-20s, standing about 5-foot-5 with a husky build. At the time of the robbery he was reportedly wearing a dark pullover, blue jeans, boots, and a black-and-yellow baseball cap.
