PLAINFIELD — A Plainfield man has been sentenced to 21 years in state prison for a violent sexual assault that took place in 2011, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park announced yesterday.
Edwin Chimilio-Calletano, 32, also will be under parole supervision for life, according to the terms imposed Friday morning by state Superior Court Judge Joseph Donohue. Following a three-week trial and nearly three days of deliberation, a Union County jury in October 2013 found Chimilio-Calletano guilty of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, two weapons offenses, and a pair of other charges.
On August 22, 2011, the 22-year-old female victim in the case was walking down South Avenue in Plainfield after leaving her job at a neighborhood bar when Chimilio-Calletano grabbed her from behind and started assaulting her with a socket wrench, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor David Hummel, who prosecuted the case.
The woman, who did not know her attacker, then was dragged behind an auto body shop, beaten further, and sexually assaulted, Hummel said.
A resident of the neighborhood called 911 when she heard the woman screaming, and arriving officers arrested Chimilio-Calletano as he emerged from behind the building. The victim managed to identify her attacker before being hospitalized with a severe leg injury and bruising to her arms, legs and back.
