Boy Scout Troop 80 at its most recent meeting in April.
CRANFORD, NJ — Boy Scout Troop 80 is calling upon all current and former members to celebrate its 90th anniversary at Hanson Park on June 9.
Being one of the oldest Boy Scout Troops in the township, Troop 80 was founded in 1928, and currently has more than 60 boys involved in the program.
Since its inception, the troop has continuously been chartered and sponsored by The First Presbyterian Church.
To celebrate its landmark anniversary, the four-hour event from 1-5 p.m. will commence with canoe races and other activities organized throughout the park.
A barbeque meal will be available and live music will be played.
In addition to extending the invite to former troopers, Mayor Tom Hannen has also committed to joining the celebration, troop leader Bob Scheurer said in interview.
While many Boy Scouts of America programs encourage anniversary celebrations, Troop 80 had sustained this tradition beyond commemorating its 50-year anniversary.
In the past, the troop welcomed alumni at the 75th anniversary, where “past members who came were able to reconnect,” Scheurer added.
“It has been a wonderful tradition to welcome back alumni both near and far,” he said.
Tom Usinowicz, troop co-leader, told LocalSource that he “is most looking forward to meeting and talking to some of the older Eagle Scouts and troop alumni.”
“I think it would be great to learn how much some things have changed, and how much some things have not, regarding scouting,” he said.
Troop 80 advocates for personal growth, character-building and an affinity for outdoor life.
It also supports leadership and athletic activities.
During the summer months, the group is characterized by weekend camping trips, canoe treks and country backpacking.
