CRANFORD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Maggie Roman, varsity lacrosse player

“I am nominating Maggie Roman as the athlete of the month because she is such a standout leader for the program. As a four-year letter winner, she comes with a ton of experience, which will help lead the Cougars to a successful season. She not only a leader on the field, by setting a high
standard for her teammates, but also helps the team off the field. Maggie is such a wonderful role model to her teammates and the younger lacrosse players in the program. She has gained the respect from her teachers, peers and coaches for always being so reliable.”
— Coach Samantha Berk

What do find most challenging when playing lacrosse?
“The hardest part of lacrosse is being patient and waiting for a good shot or a good pass. When we rush our plays, that’s when the turnovers happen.”

What is your favorite part of being on a team?
“I love playing team sports because the competition in practice and during workouts makes me a smarter and faster player. This year, we have great team chemistry on and off the field, so we have a lot of fun hanging out together, especially at pasta parties.”

What inspired you to play the sport?
“My mom was definitely my inspiration to start playing lacrosse. She played in college, so it was really great spending time with her, learning to throw and catch in my backyard. She also volunteered her time to coach my Cranford Lacrosse Club team for six years.”

Who is your greatest role model and why?
“My biggest role models on the lacrosse field are my former teammates, Sarah Ross, Hannah Ross and Megan Power. They led our lacrosse team to the first conference title for Cranford and they all play on the collegiate level now.”

Is there a skill you wish to improve upon?
“My draw control and communication skills on the field.”

What are you looking forward to most this season?
“There’s so much energy on senior night and we have a lot of fun traditions, so I’m very excited for that.”

Outside of lacrosse, what do you like to do?
“Aside from lacrosse, soccer is also a big part of my life and, last fall, I was captain of the varsity team at Cranford High School. Off the field, I like to stay active by skiing, teaching kids swim lessons and I help out the NJ Hawks Special Olympics basketball team.”

Has playing lacrosse taught you any life lessons and, if so, what?
“My biggest takeaway from lacrosse has been accountability for my actions. Sometimes it’s hard to admit you’re wrong, but you have to identify your mistakes and try new things, to get better as a team.”
