CRANFORD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Emily Wilson, varsity swimmer

“Emily Wilson had two second place finishes at the Union County Swimming Championships at the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle. She broke the Cranford High School record in the 50-yard freestyle. She has also qualified for the High School Meet of Champions, where she will swim two individual events and the 200-yard freestyle relay with her teammates. Next fall, she will be swimming for Lafayette College. Emily was nominated for her outstanding performance at the Union County Swimming Championships.” — Coach Barbara Kolesa

When and why did you get involved in swimming?
“I got involved in swimming when when I was around 6 because I loved to be in the water.”

What do you most enjoy about the sport?
“The aspect that I most enjoy about swimming is competition against other swimmers and also myself. Getting a good time in a race or placing well is always gratifying after hours of hard work in the pool.”

What strokes do you swim?
“I swim sprint to mid-distance freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke.”

What have been your major athletic highlights/achievements so far this year?
“My major athletic highlights have been committing to swim for Lafayette College, placing second in the 100- and 50-yard freestyle at my county meet, breaking my school’s 50-yard freestyle record and qualifying for the Meet of Champions.”

Do you hope to improve on any specific skill?
“I always hope to improve my times every time I race. In order to do this, I have been trying to improve my technique in practice, so that my stroke is more efficient when I race.”

Outside of athletics, what do you like to do?
“Besides swimming, I like to hang out with my friends, read and listen to music.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“In 10 years, I hope to see myself having graduated from grad school and happy in my career.”
