CLARK, NJ — Sixth-grade students in Lauren Cesare’s math class at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School partook in a simulated surgical center activity to solve order-of-operations questions using the PEMDAS rule.
Students were given a “patient chart,” which was just a response recording sheet. “Patients” were at their own tables and students posing as doctors needed to correctly solve each expression to perform their surgery successfully.
Each “doctor” was assigned an “operating room” where they worked on their patient.
Once their surgery was completed, they moved to a different table/OR to work on the next patient and solve the next problem. Students each had their own “Cesare Medical Center” badge with their school picture on it.
