SCOTCH PLAINS — The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA has announced Kathryn “Kacie” Bumiller was honored as Youth Volunteer of the Year at the 2013 New Jersey YMCA State Alliance Dinner for Volunteer Recognition on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg for her volunteer dedication at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA located in Scotch Plains. The event brought together local legislators, community members and YMCA staff to recognize the efforts of public policy makers and volunteers of the 42 YMCAs from across the state.

Bumiller, a senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, is no stranger to the YMCA. A member since birth, she has been a part of the Y’s Gymnastics program since she was three. Now, as a senior member of the Y’s Gymnastics team, she will serve as Chair for the teams’ 18th Annual Toy Drive this year. She has volunteered for the toy drive for the past nine years and is always the first to volunteer at home meets and during competitions.

Since 2004 Bumiller has volunteered at each year’s Healthy Kids Day event and has participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service Activities since its inception. She is an outstanding role model to youth, both as a leader on the gymnastics team and in volunteering at the Y’s school age child care sites as a Tutor. She also served as a volunteer at the Barclay’s PGA Charity Golf Tournament in support of the NJ YMCAs.

Outside of the Y, Kacie volunteers many hours at her school and within the community. She is passionate about helping others. She cooks and serves in the soup kitchen, is an alter server, leads prayers services and is on the Leadership Team of St. Bartholomew’s Youth Group where she helps organize service activities and retreats. Having participated in NJ National Student Leadership Conference, Kacie was nominated to the SPF HS Leadership weekend. She is a member of SMAC and Treasurer of the Spanish Club and also a member of both the Spanish National and National Honor Societies.

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA CEO Kim Decker said, “Volunteerism is very important and Kacie has consistently demonstrated her commitment to giving back. She has a bright future ahead of her. I thank her for her dedication to the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA and I am happy the Y has had such a positive influence in her life.”
