UNION MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

De’Andrae McFarlane, senior, boys track

“McFarlane, who also plays basketball, is a first-year jumper and already has cleared six feet this season in the high jump and has good distances in the long and triple jump. He is a great student athlete.” — Union track coach Tony Stewart

You’ve set a personal best with your 6-0 in the high jump at the East Brunswick Invitational. What height do you think you are capable
of this season?
I think I am capable of reaching anywhere from 6-2 to 6-4.

You also have competed in the triple jump and long jump this season. Which event do you enjoy competing in most?
I’d have to say high jump and long jump would be the most enjoyable.

Have you set any goals with regard to performance in any of those other events?
Yes, I plan to lead Union’s jump team to a county championship ring.

What other sports do you compete in, either interscholastically or recreationally, or even as a spectator?
I also participate in basketball.

Other than track, what interests you most at school?
I would have to say my tech ed class. I really enjoy working with computers .

Do you have any post-high school plans yet?
Yes, I will be attending Utica College and will be playing basketball for them

Any long-term goals in terms of career?
Well track and field isn’t my primary sport, but I would like to try out for my college’s school team

How has your training as an athlete helped you in other areas of your life, such as your classwork?
It has shown me how to never give up, and if I put my mind to something or will end up working out for the best.
