SPRINGFIELD, NJ  — A funnel cloud reaches toward the ground in Springfield in the vicinity of U.S. Route 22 and Springfield Avenue on July 7 at about 2:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in the township as heavy weather, which moved through the area during the afternoon and early evening, toppled trees, closed roads and knocked out power to thousands. Mountainside police said the winds, reported to have reached 70 mph, blew an air conditioning unit off a commercial building on Cornell Parkway near the AMC movie theater.
